Spread a Smile India started in 2005 by Sangita Mehra, works towards the overall improvement of one of the most vulnerable sections of our society; the destitute children that live on the streets and beg at traffic lights.
Spread A Smile currently works with approximately 350 children. Born and raised on the street, these kids are faced with daunting challenges, such as their tendency to lean towards violence and vices such as alcohol, smoking and gambling. Parents that are unwilling to send their children to school are counselled regularly to allow these children a chance for a better tomorrow. Spread A Smile India has successfully enrolled over 250 children in mainstream schools through interfacing between the school administration and the families of the children to facilitate the admissions of these children. It may be prudent to point out that 00% of the children that are now attending the schools are all choosing not to beg any longer and making better choices. By organising regular health camps, elementary education, excursion trips, vocational training, sanitation and social awareness programmes, Spread A Smile India aims to equip these children with the means they require for a healthy and secure future. Spread A Smile India also works with the parents of these children and engages with the parents through counselling sessions.
To empower these children it is critical to empower their mothers. These Bash women who come from unprivileged backgrounds fall prey to domestic violence and high levels of discrimination from their family and community.
With our Women Empowerment centre, we aim to induce Self Respect, Confidence, Financial and Social Independence amongst women. Teaching and training them in skills for baking, cooking, tailoring, crochet, gift bags, and candle making has enabled us to help them earn a living and support their children and families.
In our candle making unit, we are training children who are habituated to substance abuse, thievery and gambling as they do not have any dependable source of income. The idea behind the effort is to make them feel productive. And once they are self sustainable they are able to increase their confidence to be able to provide for themselves.Spread a Smile India's new initiative 'The SASI Kitchen'
With "The SASI Kitchen" project , we train the kids who are nearing school completion by providing them skill training and real hands on experience at our live training kitchen. They learn to work in actual dynamic work environment, which makes them ready for jobs / starting their own setups / work at the SASI kitchen outlets. The project serves & assists the underprivileged youth as a preventive remedy to safeguard them against forced school dropout due to financial strain; also ensuring they stay off of the vices & drug abuse at the traffic signals, ensuring they are either employed or employment ready.
